High-Tc Nanowires and Nanostructures

Stripe Experiments

Phase Coherence Experiments

By studying samples whose features are in the range 40-900 nm we are able to probe the nature of superconductivity on a mesoscopic length scale.  Mesoscopic in this case means the size of the sample is the same order of magnitude as the characteristic length scales such as the coherenece length, penetration depth, and stripe length.  For instance, the coherence length for YBCO is 3-4 nm, the penetration depth is 150 nm, and a stripe length is believed to be in the range 4-400 nm.   Probing the material on such a small length scale should produce interesting, and potentially important results.  We study a several different nanostructure geometries.  These include long, thin nanowires of width 50-500 nm, short bridges of length 40-100 nm, and islands of diameter 300-900 nm.  Currently we have experiments to look for small length scale phase coherence above Tc and we have experiments to look for signatures of stripe domains.  Details about each experiment  and data can be found by clicking on the links below.
