Martin P. Stehno originates from Vienna, Austria, where he studied physics (Technische Physik) at the Vienna University of Technology. During his studies he participated in the TASSEP student exchange program with the UIUC. There he worked on growing thin films of high-Tc superconductors, and Scanning Squid Microscopy (SSM) experiments in the DVH group and received an M.S. degree in physics.

Later he joined the Magnetic Materials and Micromagnetics workgroup at the Institute for Solid-State Physics of the Vienna University of Technology for diploma thesis research and investigated the effect of intergranular exchange in perpendicular recording media. The work was presented at the Intermag 2003 conference in Boston. Martin graduated from the Vienna University of Technology in 2002 and, as a research assistant, was involved in the development of a source code for micromagnetic simulations of the recording process, including a moving recording head.

In 2003 Martin returned to the UIUC where he was given the chance to take part in the new quantum information project. He is currently working on modelling superconducting persistent-current qubit circuits.
